Bankruptcy is sometimes the right answer. But many people file before trying to dispute the debts themselves. Under the FDCPA, debt collectors must prove they have the right to collect — and many can't.
Before filing bankruptcy, send debt validation letters under 15 USC § 1692g. Many collection accounts are sold multiple times and lack proper documentation. If a collector can't validate the debt within 30 days, they must stop all collection activity.
